Hilong Oil Service Sets New Standards in Africa with a Challenging Land Workover Project

          Date 2025-12-09

In November 2025, Hilong Oil Service successfully completed a highly challenging integrated land workover and re-completion operation in Nigeria. The operation successfully addressed industry-rare technical challenges and reduced the workover-to-completion cycle by 17.7 days, establishing a new benchmark for efficiency in the region.

Focusing on the Obiafu 44 well, noted for its high pressure with downhole pressures up to 9,413 psi, the operation encountered extreme integrity failures. These included tubing separation at the wellhead’s connection to the annulus, a closed subsurface safety valve that trapped high-pressure gas below, and a defective packer causing communication between the annulus and a high-pressure zone. Additionally, a local shortage of left-hand drill pipe severely restricted traditional well-killing and fishing operations.

Following their takeover of the project, Hilong conducted thorough  evaluations and developed a precise well-killing procedure that achieved success on the first try. By continuously monitoring losses and dynamically adjusting brine density, they effectively minimized losses without utilizing lost circulation materials. In terms of fishing operations, an innovative custom tool solution was utilized, incorporating a large-bore overshot, a windowed overshot for couplings, and a right-hand connection back-off spear—all specifically manufactured in China. This approach effectively addressed the challenges posed by a deformed fish top and restricted tool clearance inside the tubing, successfully completing the fishing operations.

By integrating innovative technical solutions with high-quality execution, Hilong not only ensured that the project was delivered safely and with high quality, but also reduced the planned wellhead operation period from 75 days to just 57.3 days.

Hilong stated that this milestone demonstrates its engineering expertise in complex environments and exceptional international project management. The company is now embarking on its second growth phase, revitalized by renewed technical and operational confidence.
